Mule, Whitetail, and Blacktail Deer
Expedition hunts are in September and camp based. In North America, alpine hunts by horse are not readily available in September like we have. A typical day involves riding through high alpine basins and glassing for a bachelor group of bucks as they bed down at treeline. Some camps offer prime fishing.
Add-ons include wolf, black bear, coyote, and upland birds. (California bighorn sheep, goat, grizzly, moose, and cougar hunts are also available.)
Traditional rut hunts are in November and ranch based. Snow in the high country pushes the deer to lower elevation winter ranges. A typical day involves driving backcountry roads through wintering grounds and hiking timbered ridges, looking for the big bucks running with does.
Selected November alpine hunts, expedition style, are based from our wilderness cabins. We travel through the snow by horse, trying to catch a wise old buck with his harem hidden away in some high mountain valley.
Hunt for a 250 to 300 pound (113 to 186 kilogram) buck. Lush mineral rich alpine grass puts a lot of growth on antlers making typical trophies high and heavy — 24 inches (60 centimetres) tall and up to 31 inches (78 centimetres) wide with main beams like a shovel handle with deep forks to 14 inches (35 centimetres). They have heavy burrs and good eye guards.
Testimonial “I was looking to hunt mule deer in God’s Country and that’s what I got in southwestern British Columbia. On the second day of my hunt I shot a beautiful 4x4 mule deer and saw an abundance of other game including mountain goats, sheep, and black bears. The guides are fantastic as well as the food and arrangements. The mountain terrain couldn’t be more beautiful and full of game. You can bet I’ll be back again!!!” WA, USA
